Youth Coding League is an innovative, project-based introduction to computer science using a youth sports model.

Unfortunately, most schools are not able to provide opportunities to teach these skills due to knowledge gaps, resources, and accessibility challenges, as you know all too well. On top of that, the middle school cliff sees a drastic drop in young girls participating in STEM classes, while the software development industry is only 20% female.

The YCL makes this effortless for schools since there is no prior knowledge needed from the student or teacher. Dedicated YCL staff, an engaging competitive element that motivates students to learn and a fully-packaged curriculum make rolling out the YCL as an extracurricular activity at your school seamless.

HOW THE YOUTH CODING LEAGUE WORKS

The league is split up into seasons. Each season lasts one semester and consists of 8 sprints or lessons from Google’s CS First curriculum.

Players can earn up to 60 points per sprint and are scored on agility, endurance, speed, experience, intellect, and awareness.

"Epics" present additional challenges for each sprint, and give players a chance to sharpen their skills and earn badges.

Individual and team stats are updated weekly on YouthCodingLeague.com by a dedicated team of scorers.

Players also have their own profiles where they can track their work and log their progress. The top 10 individual players are awarded at the conclusion of each season.

HOW THE YOUTH CODING LEAGUE WORKS

These projects represent everything players have learned throughout the semester, and the projects are entered into the postseason competition series. Projects are awarded for Technical Merit, where coding proficiency and skill is judged by a team of industry professionals.

Projects also compete for the Community Favorite Award. Each school selects one project that will represent them in the preliminary round, and that project goes on to compete in a bracket-style voting competition that determines Community Favorite winners. 

In addition, one coder from each school is recognized by their coach for showing the most improvement throughout the season.
